What Is Energy Healing, Really?

What Is Energy Healing, Really?

Energy healing has a branding problem. Say the phrase and people picture either crystals and chanting, or pure placebo. The reality, after four decades of practice, is far more ordinary — and far more interesting.

The body is already an energy system

Your heart's rhythm is electrical. Your nerves fire in electrochemical pulses. Every cell maintains a voltage across its membrane. Medicine measures these constantly — EKGs, EEGs, MRIs. The question was never whether the body runs on energy. It's whether that system can be influenced.

What a session actually does

In my work as a medical intuitive, I read where a person's system is braced, depleted, or congested — the places life force isn't moving freely. The healing itself is less about adding energy and more about removing interference, the way you'd unkink a hose rather than buy a bigger pump.

Clients typically report warmth, deep relaxation, emotional release, or simply the best sleep they've had in months. These aren't miracles. They're what a nervous system does when it finally gets permission to downshift.

Where the science is heading

Research on biofield therapies is still young, but studies on practices like Healing Touch and Therapeutic Touch show measurable effects on pain, anxiety, and wound healing. The mechanisms aren't fully mapped yet — neither were aspirin's, for its first seventy years of use.

How to approach it wisely

Be curious, not credulous. A good practitioner never asks you to abandon medical care — energy work is complementary, not a replacement. Notice how you feel over the days after a session, not just during it. And trust your own experience over anyone's claims, including mine.

The most honest thing I can say after forty years: the body wants to heal. Sometimes it just needs help remembering how.
